Mound Cemetery Prepares for Memorial Day Without Ceremony
Volunteers from the Brooklyn Center American Legion decorated the graves of veterans of one of the oldest cemeteries in the area, Mound Cemetery. The annual Memorial Day ceremony is canceled for the first time in many years.
“There may be families that come out to visit the grave on Memorial Day. It’s just right to have a flag in front of it,” said Len Jacobsson with the Brooklyn Center American Legion.
Decorating the graves with flags isn’t as easy as it seems. Some of the graves in Mound Cemetery are very old and markers are not clearly visible. Some of the earliest settlers from the area are buried in the cemetery. Veterans from as far back as the Civil War or Spanish-American War are also buried there.
