Morrison Elected to U.S. House, Omar Retains Congressional Seat

There will be a new representative headed to Washington, D.C., while an incumbent retains a congressional seat.
Democrat Kelly Morrison defeated Republican challenger Tad Jude for the 3rd Congressional District seat. U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, meanwhile, retained her House seat representing the 5th Congressional District by defeating Republican Dalia Al-Aqidi.
3rd Congressional District Results
- Kelly Morrison 58.4 percent and 240,208 total votes
- Tad Jude 41.5 percent and 170,426 total votes.
Morrison, a former state senator who lives in Deephaven, will replace Democrat Dean Phillips. Phillips announced in 2023 he wouldn’t seek re-election to focus on an unsuccessful Democratic bid for president.
Jude, who lives in Maple Grove, ran unsuccessfully in 2022 for Hennepin County attorney.
Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District includes Brooklyn Park, Maple Grove, Osseo and Plymouth, as well as other suburbs such as Bloomington, Chanhassen, Eden Prairie and cities around Lake Minnetonka.
Omar Retains 5th Congressional District Seat
- Ilhan Omar 74.4 percent and 261,061 total votes
- Dalia Al-Aqidi 24.6 percent and 86,210 total votes
U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, a sometimes controversial figure in her own party, retained her seat in the 5th Congressional District. She defeated Dalia Al-Aqidi, who lives in Golden Valley.
Omar also had to fend off a primary challenge from Democrat Don Samuels in August.
Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District includes Brooklyn Center, Crystal, Golden Valley, New Hope and Robbinsdale, plus the city of Minneapolis and a handful of other suburbs.
