Memorial Blood Centers Report Urgent Need for Blood
Summer vacations allow people to take a break, but medical emergencies never take a day off. It’s why there’s an urgent need for blood right now.
At Memorial Blood Centers in Plymouth, they want to have at least a three-day supply of the various blood types.
Right now, they have less than a one-day supply of some blood types.
So they’re asking new and repeat donors to take some time from their busy summer schedules to make a donation, because blood can’t be made synthetically.
“Blood in hospitals truly does help save and sustain the lives of patients,” said Erica Buege, a spokesperson for Memorial Blood Centers. “You never know necessarily when you’re going to need a transfusion. Any one of us could get into an accident or something tomorrow. It’s having that blood on the shelf when it needs to be there ahead of time.”
Eligible blood donors have to be at least 17 years old (or 16 with parental consent). They should be in good health, and their system should be free of antibiotics for 24 hours. And if you’ve had the cold or flu, you should be symptom-free for at least 72 hours.
