McGarvey Wins Brooklyn Park City Council Special Election
After a special election on Tuesday, Tony McGarvey will be Brooklyn Park’s newest city council member.
McGarvey defeated Daniel Goba to take one of Brooklyn Park’s West District council seats.
McGarvey received 351 votes while Goba received 78 votes.
“I feel good, I feel humbled and I feel grateful,” McGarvey told CCX News. “We planned our work, we worked our plan and we got the job done right … I thank you for showing up on a hot Tuesday in August to make your voice heard.”
The West District seat was previously held by Susan Pha. She joined the Minnesota Senate last year.
“We just hit the doors — we just knocked, and knocked, and knocked doors for weeks and weeks,” McGarvey said.
McGarvey said he wanted to thank his supporters, as well as Goba for running a “clean” campaign.
McGarvey is a 17-year Brooklyn Park resident, a painter by trade and a U.S. Army veteran.
After the votes are canvassed and McGarvey is sworn in, he said he feels strongly about advocating for worker protections while on the council.
“The thing I’m most excited to get to work on is making sure that any future development done in our city is done responsibly, and by that I mean if people are, if companies or developers are given tax increment financing or anything where the city has a hand in it, I’m excited to make sure that there are worker protections involved,” he said. “I mean I’m excited to push for that and work with the others on the council to try and make that happen. So that, whatever we do moving forward in Brooklyn Park becomes an asset to our community, not a liability.”
McGarvey’s term will run through Dec. 31, 2024.
