Maria’s Voice Produces Educational Video
Domestic Violence Awareness month ends in a few days, but Maria’s Voice will continue their advocacy work to promote healthy and safe relationships. The nonprofit is hoping their work will ensure domestic violence is not ignored in communities.
By taking small, but mighty actions steps for safer relationships, Maria’s Voice says we can all play a part to promote healthy relationships, no matter where we live and who we are. Maria’s Voice is sharing an educational video to help people know the signs of domestic violence and to take action steps for safer relationships. In the video, there are 12 subtle and common signs to watch out for.
Co-founder Lissa Weimelt says she wishes her family had known the signs before losing Maria.
“We did not know the common signs of domestic abuse. We really did not really know what was happening to Maria. We didn’t really know how to say when we noticed that she was not appearing at family events that we did not know that’s a primary sign of domestic abuse. That’s isolation. When she was being financially controlled by her husband in her job. That’s financial abuse and that’s a form of abuse,” said Weimelt.
Sara Silva is the executive director of Maria’s Voice and is working to find ways to broaden their outreach through their new video.
“When the community has an opportunity to be aware and educated about domestic violence we’re going to be able to recognize those common signs more readily, have more empathy when we encounter them in our friendships and relationships,” said Silva.
Through their work, Maria’s Voice hopes to encourage normalizing talking about domestic abuse.
