Maple Grove Offers Recreation Activities at Shoppes
The pandemic has forced everyone to think in new and creative ways, and the Parks and Recreation department in Maple Grove is no different. The department is used to planning events and marketing them as far ahead as six months out but changing COVID-19 restrictions are also changing their timeline.
“We’re launching these things as we can, as safely as we can,” said Aimee Peterson, superintendent of Recreation in Maple Grove.
The latest curveball the department has had to contend with has been figuring out space for winter activities. With the use of school facilities up in the air, the department turned to the economic development director to investigate warehouse or retail space that might be available to lease for winter activities. As a result, the city leased a 17,000 square foot space from the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes. The space is the former Forever 21 store, and it will become home to three pickleball courts or a fitness studio that meets social distancing guidelines.
“We were tight on facility space and this allow us to spread out and do yoga, Zumba, and Tai Chi. We can offer services that are so valuable during this time,” said Peterson. “We’re excited about it.”
The city leases the space, and Peterson is confident they’ll have use of the space through March.
