Maple Grove Celebrates “Wonders of Winter”
Maple Grove’s Central Park is celebrating Super Bowl weekend close to home with everything from wagon rides and fat tire biking to ice carving.
Roger Rust took out chain saws and started work on a big block of ice on Friday. He’ll spend hours carving it into a 3-D bust of a Viking.
“You know you go from a two dimensional picture to a three-dimensional carving,” said Rust. “That’s the trick of ice carving is to make it look like what you want it to look like in three dimensions.”
Once the block is transformed visitors will be able to take selfies with it as part of the “Wonders of Winter” celebration at Maple Grove’s Central Park. You can even dress up in a Vikings’ costume. It’s all part of the fun.
“We really wanted people in Maple Grove to celebrate obviously we’ve got the Super Bowl in the Twin Cities and we wanted to give people in Maple Grove something fun to do over the weekend,” said special events worker Lucie Patrick. “It’s really a great way to celebrate the fact that there are so many great outdoor winter activities you can do in Minnesota in the winter time.”
In addition to ice skating at the Central Park loop, there will be snowshoeing, Nordic walking, wagon rides, a fat tire biking demonstration and s’mores by the fire.
The “Wonders of Winter” event starts at 11 a.m. Saturday.
