Man Killed in Brooklyn Center Dog Attack ID’d
Brooklyn Center police say a man who suffered extensive injuries following a dog attack Thursday afternoon has died.
Police say the attack happened at around 12:45 p.m. Thursday behind a home in the 5700 block of Halifax Avenue North. Police say four dogs, all American pit bull terriers, bit the man leaving “extensive bites on most of his body.”
According to police, officers used a nonlethal round of rubber bullets to get the dogs to disperse back into the home.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner identified the victim Friday evening as Dezmond Thomas Trawick, 22, of Brooklyn Center. Police say Thomas Trawick was intubated at the scene and rushed to North Memorial Health Hospital for surgery. He was pronounced dead Thursday, a couple hours after his arrival, the medical examiner said.
An update provided by Brooklyn Center police say Thomas Trawick was a family member taking care of the dogs and was not the owner.
The animals were later taken to an impound facility in Maple Grove, where they will be on quarantine pending a “dangerous dog” investigation, police said.
The dog attack is the second to occur in a week. Last Friday, a pitbull bit a 9-year-old girl in Brooklyn Park, then charged at police before an officer fatally shot the dog. The girl suffered injuries to her head.
Brooklyn Park police say the animal turned out to be a family pet that for some reason turned on the child. Police say the child is expected to recover.
