Local School Districts Brace for Budget Shortfalls
School officials say the problem is a lack of state and federal funding to cover the growing costs of special education. They’re forced to subsidize special education with money from conventional classroom operations. As a result, the Robbinsdale district is expecting a $10 million budget deficit that may require dozens of layoffs. School officials hope a plan to use a portion of the state budget surplus to mitigate the problem will pass in the remaining days of the legislative session.
