Local Lawmakers React To Trump Assassination Attempt
Lawmakers from the CCX News viewing area are reacting to the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump.
Rep. Melissa Hortman, DFL-Brooklyn Park, Rep. Cedrick Frazier, DFL-New Hope, and Rep. Kristin Robbins, R-Maple Grove, were among those to issue responses following Saturday’s shooting.
Hortman, the Minnesota House speaker, said she was “relieved” the former president is safe and commended the Secret Service and first responders.
“Political violence is unacceptable and has no place in our country,” Hortman said in a statement.
Rep. Frazier also condemned the violence, saying “it’s fundamental to have a safe and peaceful process to our elections.”
Added Frazier, “I am very aware of the real fear and anxiety that is being felt right now. I want people to know that you are not alone and you are not helpless.”
There is no place in our democracy for violence. It’s fundamental to have a safe and peaceful process to our elections. Also, I am very aware of the real fear and anxiety that is being felt right now. I want people to know that you are not alone and you are not helpless.

The bipartisan Minnesota Civility caucus, which is co-chaired by Rep. Kristin Robbins of Maple Grove, also issued the following statement:
As Co-Chairs of the Civility Caucus, we were horrified and saddened by the attempted assassination of former President Trump Saturday and the death of an innocent rally attendee. We are thankful that former President Trump was not seriously injured, and we are continuing to keep in our thoughts and prayers those who were critically wounded in the attack.
Political violence is never acceptable and should be condemned by all who support democracy, which is predicated on freedom of assembly, free elections, the right to peaceful protest, and the rule of law. The strength of the American experiment is that we, the people, change our government leaders through free elections, not by force, coercion or corruption. We must all unite in our condemnation of political violence and our renewed commitment to working for change through our democratic institutions.”
In addition to Robbins, the Civility Caucus is co-chaired by Rep. Sandra Feist, DFL-New Brighton; Sen. Zach Duckworth, R-Lakeville; and Sen. Grant Hauschild, DFL-Hermantown.
MN Gun Legislation Took Effect This Year
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed so-called “red flag” legislation into law this year. It essentially prevents people from buying or having guns whom a judge determines to be a risk to themselves or others.
State lawmakers, however, did not pass legislation to restrict the sale of semi-automatic rifles, like the AR-15-style rifle used in the assassination attempt of former President Trump.
Such legislation has been a hot-button topic with gun-rights lobbyists vehemently against.
