J.C. Penney announced it will close its Maple Grove store, located in the Grove Square Mall, 13701 Grove Dr. N. The announcement comes as the retailer tries to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Other J.C. Penney locations closing include Eden Prairie, Coon Rapids and Willmar. The Southdale store in Edina previously closed.
Like other department stores, J.C. Penney was struggling even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The Texas-based retailer has said it plans to close 242 locations, or 30% of its stores nationwide.
According to multiple reports, The Maple Grove JCP store-closing sales with a wide selection will start June 12 and are expected to last 10 to 16 weeks.
“While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” said Jill Soltau, chief executive officer of J.C. Penney in a statement posted on the company’s website.
