HOM Furniture Reveals Big Plans for Brooklyn Center
Brooklyn Center is in the midst of a redevelopment boom. Work at one high profile site is already underway with the addition of a HOM Furniture store that’s bringing in more than just home furnishings.
From Highway 100, it will be difficult to miss the newest business moving into Brooklyn Center.
“It’s going to be mostly glass windows. You’re going to be able to see quite a bit of inside of our store at night, day, any given time,” said John Pierce, HOM Furniture’s real estate manager, about the side of the building facing Highway 100.
HOM Furniture has big plans for its new home inside a former Kohl’s store in Brooklyn Center.
“We see what’s going on in the area, and we’re really excited to come into Brooklyn Center, help bring some jobs here, help bring some new fresh faces,” said Pierce.
Construction crews are already at work renovating the inside of the two-level, 75,000-square- foot building, and soon there will be a 25,000-square-foot addition.
“It’s kind of like a one stop shop for anything your home would need. We’ve got accessories, lamps, we’ve got bedding, we’ve got a mattress department, patio furniture,” said Pierce.
Preliminary drawings show space for not only flooring, rugs and interior and exterior home furnishings, but there’s also more than 12,000 square feet that will be leased to other tenants. That’s four to six different businesses next to HOM Furniture.
“We want to kind of help the area grow,” said Pierce. “Our goal is to add some more competition with coffee shops and some restaurants.”
It’s exactly the kind of development Brooklyn Center wants to see. Nearby, a new Bank of America is coming, and across the street, the former Brookdale Square site is positioned for new housing and retail.
“To have brand name businesses coming into the community, building new, investing here, it speaks volumes for the opportunities that exist here,” said Meg Beekman, Brooklyn Center’s community development director. “I do think over the next three to five years, you’re going to see significant transformation in the community.”
HOM Furniture executives like where they’re sitting near Highway 100 and Bass Lake Road.
“It’s the old saying, location, location, location,” said Wayne Johansen, one of the principal owners of HOM Furniture. “One of the things is there is 60,000 cars a day going by here [on Highway 100] plus across here [Bass Lake Road], there’s another 15,000.”
HOM Furniture plans to open in Brooklyn Center in the fall of 2018. It will be eighth location in the metro, and the 16th HOM Furniture location. The Brooklyn Center store plans to hire between 35 to 50 new employees.
