Hennepin County Swap-It Event Helps Deck the Halls at a Discount
Unwanted clutter became someone else’s Christmas cheer earlier this month in Brooklyn Center.
“So I got this big wreath, which is a statement piece,” said Lea Payette of Minneapolis. “I might spruce it up a little bit with some ornaments. And then in my bag, I’ve got some holiday lights as well to add a little bit of twinkle.”
On Oct. 12, Hennepin County hosted a Swap-It event at the Brookdale Library focused on holiday decor, just in time for the holiday season.

Garland was one of many free items available to folks at the Hennepin County Swap-It event held on Oct. 12.
The county hosts these events several times a year. It’s an opportunity for people to get rid of unwanted items and pick up things for their own homes.
County officials say these Swap-It events keep items out of the waste stream and help folks save money in the process.
“There’s so many great stories like that where if somebody’s looking for this one item, maybe they don’t have the resources to purchase that item, and so they’re able to find those things used and at this free event,” said Kirsten Wahlberg, Hennepin County’s waste reduction and recycling specialist.
Any items not picked up during the swap-it event were donated to Arc’s Value Village.
The next swap-it event is Feb. 28 at the Ridgedale Library. That event will focus on kitchen gadgets.
