Hennepin County Monitors Water Quality on Local Lakes Weekly
Hennepin County public health staff went to Weaver Lake Beach Thursday to test out water quality.
Samples and analysis are done at local beaches once per week, and that information helps prevent the spread of waterborne illnesses. When E.coli bacteria levels exceed guidelines, the county recommends to the city a beach closure.
An environmentalist told CCX News one good rule of thumb is to stay out of the water after a heavy rain.
“Typically we see high indication of E.coli in the water when there is heavy rainfall, so we do recommend you not swim within 24 hours of a heavy rainfall. If you are driving your boats, we recommend disposing of your waste properly. We don’t want that in the water,” said Hennepin County Environmentalist Zamzam Abdirahman.
Abdirahman also says it’s best not to drink lake water.
