Hennepin County Hosts Child-Care Licensing Resource Fair
Hennepin County is facing a crisis when it comes to in-home child care. Now it’s making a push to find more people to provide those services.
“We lost a lot of providers in Hennepin County, and we are trying to retain the ones that we do have, and we definitely need more people,” said Tammy Shinaul, a licenser for Hennepin County’s child-care licensing division.
On Saturday, the Brookdale Library is hosting an in-home child-care licensing and resource fair.
People will have a chance to learn about the licensing process and connect with resources to help improve and market their business.
There are currently 500 licensed, in-home child-care providers in Hennepin County. However, over the last three years, county officials say they’ve lost a considerable amount due to retirements, and not enough new providers are taking their place. The county would like to add around 500 more.
“Infant care is a big area that is lacking, so that is why we’re doing this resource fair,” Shinaul said. “Hopefully to encourage providers to get help they need and show up. And also, anyone who is interested in doing child care and making their own business, they’re welcome to come as well.”
Saturday’s resource fair goes from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. To become a licensed in-home child-care provider in Hennepin County, you can go to the county website for more information on requirements.
