HCMC, North Memorial Begin Merger Talks
Two of the metro area’s largest hospital systems are in discussions to form an alliance.
Hennepin Healthcare — which operates HCMC downtown — has begun talks to join forces with Robbinsdale’s North Memorial Health. But what exactly that partnership would look like is unclear.
The alliance could be anything from a partnership between the two entities, to a full-blown merger into one organization.
Representatives from both hospitals say the talks are preliminary, but the hospital systems need to explore ways to meet the needs of their patients and the community.
A statement from North Memorial, said:
“It is part of North Memorial Health’s responsibility to our community to provide the highest quality health care now and into the future. Evaluating partnerships that can strengthen our offerings to our community is one way to provide greater access to care.”
A statement sent to CCX News from Hennepin Healthcare followed that same theme. It said:
“We have explored — and continue to explore — ways in which our organization may develop other strategic partnerships. Our goal in any collaborative or partnership will be to create a sustainable economic model so that we are able to provide the highest quality care to our community.”
Talks between the two organizations reportedly began about six months ago.
The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners still has corporate authority over Hennepin Healthcare. The board plans to meet on Thursday to go over documents on the potential alliance.
