Golden Valley Officials Talk Downtown Refresh
The city of Golden Valley is trying to revive its downtown area around Winnetka Avenue and Golden Valley Road. Tuesday, City Manager Jason Zimmerman talked to the Rotary Club about what the area could look like in the future.
Zimmerman said the city has been working for years to envision what downtown might look like as many as two decades from now. “We’ve hired a consultant to do some work for us, and spent most of 2019 engaging with residents,” said Zimmerman. “They’ll be continuing work throughout the rest of 2020.”
Golden Valley officials say interest is high in making downtown a social gathering-place. Redevelopment plans include increased bicycle and pedestrian trail connections, and a shopping center.
“The market isn’t supporting things like it used to,” said Zimmerman. He says that means the city needs to think about new uses that future transit riders can take advantage of, such as residential, shopping and offices.
Currently the city is focused on gathering public input. They’ll have a final report at the end of 2020, which will go to the city council.
