Golden Valley Nonprofit Prepares to Help Hurricane Victims
Volunteers associated with Headwaters Relief Organization in Golden Valley will meet Thursday to decide what role they can play in helping people from the Bahamas devastated by Hurricane Dorian. The nonprofit brings not only clean-up tools like hammers, brooms and rakes to areas in need, but mental health services too.
Cheryl Vennerstrom with the Headwaters Relief Organization says directly after a disaster, often people just need to talk.
“In the early days, it’s just listening to people tell their stories and being a comforting presence,” says Vennerstrom. “If somebody is having a lot of difficulty, we try to help them get the resources they need.”
Volunteers haven’t decided when they are leaving just yet. However, they’ll meet Thursday to discuss a plan.
