Golden Valley Names Interim Police Chief Finalist for Permanent Role
After initially interviewing two finalists for police chief, but opting to continue its search, the city of Golden Valley has now named a new finalist for the job.
The city has named Matt Clark, Golden Valley’s interim police chief, as the finalist for the permanent role.
“I am excited that Interim Chief Clark decided to apply for the position,” said Golden Valley City Manager Noah Schuchman in a press statement. “I am grateful for his great work over the past six months and look forward to hearing more about his vision for the department.”
Clark was named interim chief last fall. He had filled in since the resignation of former Chief Virgil Green following a pair of internal investigations.
Golden Valley residents and stakeholders will have an opportunity to meet Clark at a public forum Thursday, April 9, at 5:30 p.m., held at the Golden Valley City Hall council chambers. CCX Media will stream the forum at gvlive.ccxmedia.org.
“Interim Chief Clark has demonstrated strong leadership and a deep commitment to our community during his time in this role,” said Golden Valley Mayor Roslyn Harmon. “I am pleased he is willing to be considered as we work to find the best permanent leader for our police department.”
Clark previously served 10 years as chief of the University of Minnesota Department of Public Safety before retiring last May. He began his law enforcement career in 1991, serving five difference agencies, including 22 years with the Minneapolis Police Department.

Interim Police Chief Matt Clark introduces himself to the Golden Valley City Council at the Oct. 21, 2025 meeting.
The city is expected to make a decision following the April 9 community engagement forum.
GMP Consultants, an executive search firm, has helped the city in its search.
