Golden Valley Couple Launches Monochrome Clothing Company
In the world of corporate America, bold colors aren’t exactly commonplace.
“It’s awash with neutral tones, and maybe blues and blacks and grays,” said Darren DeBerg of Golden Valley.
Yes, a few outfits may stand out. But for the most part, the fashion is a little blasé.
However, the Golden Valley husband and wife team of Darren and Claire DeBerg are now on a mission to change that.
“If you just add a pop of color, we’re hoping it brings more joy to the world,” said Claire DeBerg.
Claire and Darren are the owners of Monochrome, it’s an online business that features a full line of bright-colored clothing and accessories for both men and women.
“Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. All six colors — the six basic colors you’d find in a Crayola box,” Claire said.
The idea is to give people options that are anything but drab.
“The women’s line has suit blazers and pants,” Claire said, while showing off the products. “We also have skirts for women and T-shirts.”
Monochrome launched in 2019 after Darren had a hard time finding a basic yellow T-shirt.
“Couldn’t find it, so he decided to make his own,” Claire said.
Made in Golden Valley
Yes, Darren designed every single piece of merchandise inside their Golden Valley home, using the free time he had during COVID to make it happen.
And no, he doesn’t have a design background. Darren’s full-time job involves selling industrial equipment.
“You just go on YouTube, go online and start learning how people do this,” Darren said. “Anything you want to do, there’s someone showing you how to do it on YouTube right now.”
While the goal is to sell Monochrome merchandise to others, make no mistake, this is a family that believes in its product.
“We get a lot of attention,” Claire said. “Like, we travel, our travel days when we’re going through the airport, we like to travel in monochrome.”
They travel in Monochrome, and they also wear the colors in everyday life.
Then there’s their 11-year-old son, Harold. He’s an avid skater who decks himself out in Monochrome when he’s on the skateboard.
“Wearing monochrome makes him feel good,” Claire said. “When he’s wearing all yellow, you can’t help but feel bright and alive.”
Meanwhile, Claire and Darren certainly don’t expect everyone to go full-on monochrome, but in their minds, a little extra color can go a long way for people who want to express their individual personalities.
“If you want to go all-in, then we’ve got you covered,” Darren said.
All of the Monochrome items are priced at under $100. At some point in the future, Monochrome would like to expand its product line to include shoes, surfing and skating apparel.
