Golden Valley Considers Putting Officers in Two Schools
After a two-year hiatus, the Robbinsdale School District is exploring the possibility of putting police officers back into two Golden Valley schools.
This week, the Golden Valley City Council will consider a proposal to place school resource officers inside Sandburg Middle School and the Robbinsdale Academy-Highview alternative program.
The goal is to increase student safety and improve communication and coordination between the district and the Golden Valley Police Department.
The request from the district comes after two students at Sandburg Middle School were charged last March for bringing a gun to campus. The incident came to light after a video surfaced on Snapchat showing one of the students holding the gun in a school bathroom.
According to city documents, Golden Valley’s Police Employment, Accountability and Community Engagement (PEACE) Commission stated its opposition to putting officers back in schools, citing ineffectiveness and a “negative impact on historically marginalized groups.”
