Golden Valley Community Foundation to Help Area Nonprofits
As local social service organizations deal with the financial blow of the novel coronavirus, a Golden Valley nonprofit looks to provide them with some relief.
The Golden Valley Community Foundation (GVCF) has established a COVID-19 Relief Fund to help support organizations in the west metro most significantly impacted by the pandemic.
“All of them that I’ve had conversations with have had their utilization go way up,” said Dean Penk, chair of the Golden Valley Community Foundation. “Their costs are going up and their revenues are going down, so what we’re trying to do is figure out how we can help them help our community constituencies by providing them the funds to do more of what they do well already.”

PRISM Among the Beneficiaries
Golden Valley-based PRISM,which provides food, clothing and shelter to people in the western suburbs, is one organization that has already benefited from the help of the GVCF. When schools closed in March, the GVCF provided money to PRISM to help the agency feed children who would have otherwise received meals at school through their respective districts.
The GVCF is in the process of looking at other social service organizations that could benefit from the COVID-19 Relief Fund.
“Our needs to raise funds for our own organization are minimal,” Penk said. “So all that we can do to raise more funds to help these organizations is what we’ve focused our efforts on.”
While donors are encouraged to continue their regular support of area nonprofits, Penk says the COVID-19 Relief Fund will simplify giving and allow the GVCF to direct money where the need is the greatest.
“The impact we’re hoping for is to be able to help those organizations that are helping those in need,” Penk said. “Shut-ins, people at risk, kids, people who are not able to get food, be able to help fund those organizations so that they can do what they’re sent up to do.”
Penk says the GVCF is waiving all administrative fees for the relief fund. This means 100 percent of a donor’s gift will go toward helping those most affected by COVID-19.
“I am confident that people will come forward to help fund some of the organizations that are serving the community,” Penk said.
