Golden Valley Approves City’s First Water-Based Pet Cremation Business
A new business is coming to Golden Valley, one that is relatively uncommon and would be a city first.
The Golden Valley recently approved a conditional use permit for Aqua Bridge, a business that provides a water-based pet cremation service, also called aquamation.
It’s described as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional cremation.
“Aquamation is an environmentally sustainable, gentle, and affordable alternative to flame-based cremation,” read a narrative provided by Aqua Bridge to Golden Valley officials.
Aquamation uses a solution of 95 percent water and 5 percent potassium hydroxide heated to more than 200 degrees in a machine for approximated 18-20 hours, the documents read.
The business would be located at 610 Ottawa Ave. N., near a Tesla car dealership.
Golden Valley officials said the environmental impact will be low with potential for producing “some small odors.”
“The machine that they use will be vented, and has screens in it that will be vented through the top of the building. They think it will be very low impact,” said Steven Okey, Golden Valley associate planner.
Company officials said the end result will be similar to traditional cremation with ashes produced.
At its Aug. 6 meeting, the city council approved the conditional use permit by unanimous vote.
Golden Valley City Council member Sophia Ginis said she came away pleased from what she learned about the business.
“While this is for pets, I really appreciated that the new technology was being brought to the field and that our residents would during a very painful time of losing an animal have another alternative,” said Ginis. “I think it will be, just overall, a great resource to have in our city.”
