Former Rep. Winkler Announces Run for House 43B Seat
Former Rep. Ryan Winkler, who served multiple terms representing cities in the northwest suburbs, is planning another run for Minnesota House.
The Golden Valley DFLer will seek the House 43B seat currently held by Rep. Mike Freiberg, who is running for state Senate.
“I’m launching my campaign today and here’s what it’s all about: shared prosperity,” said Winkler in a statement. “That means making sure every Minnesotan has a fighting chance — access to healthcare, affordable housing, quality childcare, meaningful work, and vibrant communities.”
Winkler served as House majority leader from 2019 through 2022. Winkler ran for Hennepin County attorney in 2022, but did not win election.
Winkler was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2006, serving consecutive two-year terms until resigning in 2015 due to a move overseas. He returned to the House in 2019 serving for two more terms.
As House majority leader, Winker led a push to legalize recreational marijuana in Minnesota. Recreational cannabis for adult use was ultimately legalized in 2023. Prior to that, he spearheaded legislation that led to the approval of low potency, hemp-derived THC edibles and drinks for adults 21 and older.
Over the last couple years, Winkler co-founded Crooked Beverage Co., a THC-infused beverage business.
House 43B covers all of Golden Valley and Robbinsdale, and parts of Crystal and Plymouth.
