Former Plymouth Mayor Al Hilde’s Legacy Continues After Death
An outpouring of tributes continues in remembrance of former Plymouth Mayor Al Hilde Jr.
Hilde died July 28 at his home in Jackson Hole, Wyo. He was 90 years old. An obituary announcement was published in Monday’s edition of the Star Tribune.
Hilde served as Plymouth mayor from 1968 to 1977. It was a time when Plymouth began a rapid transformation from farmland to growing city.
Current Plymouth City Council member and former City Manager Jim Willis told the Star Tribune that it was Hilde who saw the need for a comprehensive plan.
“Everything was well planned and thought out,” said Willis about Plymouth’s early development.
Hilde’s legacy lives on to this day. The renowned Hilde Performance Center is named in his honor. Hilde made a significant donation to make the outdoor amphitheater next to city hall possible.
Seeing the need for portable toilets from his days in the U.S. Army, Hilde founded Satellite Industries in 1958. The Plymouth-based company grew to be one of the largest in the sanitation rental industry.
Funeral services for Hilde have been held.
