Fishing to the Extreme – What I Learned at Summer Camp
At this camp, it’s all about fun, with fish. Kids at Three Rivers Park District’s “Extreme Fishing Camp” spent the week rafting the Mississippi and fishing.
It’s all part of an effort to get kids outside and active – and to teach them skills they might not get elsewhere.
Some kids are brand new to the sport. Others like Chet Davenport fish all the time. Even though Chet’s an expert angler, he’s still learning new things from camp.
“I’ve never tried fly fishing,” he says. “In this camp they teach you how to do skills that you normally wouldn’t know.”
So popular, there’s a waiting list
While Chet fly-fishes, other kids employ the classic rod and reel, or catch bait fish in a big net. It’s all building up to Thursday, when they take everything they caught during the week and fry it up for lunch.
Extreme Fishing Camp’s so popular that there’s a waiting list to get in. If you want to enroll your kid, you’ll have to wait till next year. Registration for next summer’s camps starts in January.
