Scholarships Created in Memory of Park Center Alum
A Brooklyn Park family’s tragedy helped create an opportunity to send a group of Park Center students to college.
At a banquet on Jan. 23, five seniors from Park Center each received checks for $5,000 apiece. The money came courtesy of the MOE123 Scholarship Fund.
The scholarship was created in honor of Mostafa Sarim, an alumnus of Park Center who contracted the flu and died on Jan. 23, 2018 at the age of 41.
Sarim valued education, so his family established the scholarship as a way to honor his life on what would otherwise be a difficult day.
“These scholarships went to students who were so deserving. Most who have been through some very difficult paths, from immigration and from financial need, so it’s an outstanding way to support these students in their educational process,” said Jody Hansen, a college resource counselor at Park Center.
The scholarship fund raised $26,000 in its inaugural year. The hope is to offer the scholarship to more students next year and provide mentorship opportunities as well.
