DFL State Rep. Mike Freiberg Announces Run for State Senate
One day after longtime Minnesota Senator Ann Rest announced that the 2026 legislative session would be her last, a Golden Valley lawmaker has announced his desire to take her place.
State Rep. Mike Freiberg, DFL-Golden Valley, announced on Wednesday his candidacy to serve Senate District 43. That district includes all or parts of Crystal, Golden Valley, New Hope, Plymouth and Robbinsdale.
“I congratulate and thank Senator Rest for her years of service to the northwest metro and the State of Minnesota,” said Rep. Freiberg in a statement to CCX News. “I look forward to continuing her legacy of steady leadership and attention to the community.”

Rep. Mike Freiberg, DFL-Golden Valley, was first elected to the House in 2012.
Freiberg has served in the Minnesota Legislature since 2013. Prior to that, he was a member of the Golden Valley City Council.
Some of the accomplishments Freiberg listed in his announcement include legislation related to elections, public health, consumer protection, local government, education and public infrastructure in the communities he represents.
During Freiberg’s last three years in the House, he has chaired or co-chaired the committee in charge of election law. New policies have included automatic voter registration, pre-registration of 16- and 17-year olds, restoring the vote to people on probation, the Minnesota Voting Rights Act, and the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
