Crystal Police Receive New Fire Suppression Tool
The Crystal Police Department has a new device that can help fight fires and save lives.
The department was donated a FireTKO FST, an aerosol fire suppression tool built by Illinois-based W.S. Darley & Company.
Police say the device can help keep fires manageable if they arrive on-scene before firefighters.
“We are first on the scene usually, and we’re able to use a tool like this in the meantime between us getting there and the fire department getting there,” said Crystal Police Lt. Justin Tourville.
It’s designed to “hopefully either help someone get out [of the burning building] or … start to reduce the property damage that can occur from a fire,” Tourville said.
The Cass Lodge Masonic Lodge in Minneapolis and Minnesota Masonic Charities donated the tool to the Crystal Police Department on Jan. 31.
The device, which costs about $1,000, operates similar to a grenade.
“They would just find an access point — a window, a door,” Tourville said. “[They] pull the pins … throw it into the room and let it do its job.”
According to the manufacturer, the device can lower the temperature in a burning room by up to 1,000 degrees.
