Crystal Group Home Linked to 37 Missing-Person Cases Since 2019
A recent published report reveals the challenges local police face when responding to calls connected to group homes.
The latest case involved a Crystal assisted living facility under investigation by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) for alleged neglect.
The MDH investigated Amazing Love Assisted Living, 5724 Bass Lake Road, on a complaint one resident had not received adequate supervision and care. The facility had 14 residents at the time of the investigation.
According to the report, a woman was diagnosed with schizophrenia and had a history of drug abuse, hallucinations and leaving the facility without proper supervision. She was also at risk for sexual abuse, the report showed.
Inadequate documentation was also found on multiple occasions she went missing
The woman was on court-ordered civil commitment and was not allowed to freely leave the facility without proper notification and supervision. She was also prescribed medication for mental health management.
The report showed she had 37 missing person notifications dating back to 2019, citing an MDH interview with law enforcement. Crystal police responded to many of those cases.
MDH investigators concluded the facility committed a Level 3 violation, one level below the most serious.
Amazing Love was ordered to make corrective actions and pay $7,000 in correction fees.
State statute shows an assisted living facility may not accept a person as a resident “unless the facility has staff, sufficient in qualifications, competency, and numbers, to adequately provide the services agreed to in the assisted living contract.”
