Complaint: Suspect “Just Lost It” Before Fatal Brooklyn Park Apartment Shooting
A Brooklyn Park shooting suspect has been charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder following the Feb. 19 shooting at a Brooklyn Park apartment complex.
James Nedeau II told police he “just lost it” when he fired numerous shots inside the Brooks Landing apartments where he lived, the criminal complaint said.
According to the criminal complaint:
Nedeau, had gotten into an argument with his father, hitting him in the face and pointing a gun at him. He then followed his father to the apartment office where he started shooting.
Inside the office, while attempting to kill his father, a woman, identified as 29-year-old Deana Doely, was shot and killed. As many as 18 shots were heard on an initial 911 call before police arrived, the complaint stated.
Nedeau then went to the fifth floor, where he used a second gun to shoot six rounds at the door of an apartment belonging to the apartment manager. The complaint said the elderly woman ducked under a table to avoid getting shot. She was not injured, despite shots “shattering her apartment door.”
Following the shootings, Nedeau fled and visited a family member. Nedeau, himself, then called 911 to surrender to police.
During the arrest, Nedeau was seen sitting on a curb. He then stood up with a gun in his hand before placing the weapon on the the ground.
In speaking with police, Nedeau said he “realized he did something wrong and wanted to turn himself in.”
He said he “doesn’t have an excuse for taking” Doely’s life, and was trying to kill his father and the apartment manager, the complaint said.
The suspect further stated he “should have just gone up to his apartment and smoked a blunt instead of shooting everyone.”
Nedeau also said he used a second gun because the first weapon “ran out of ammunition.”
Police recovered three firearms in Nedeau’s backpack found at the home he visited. A search warrant of Nedeau’s apartment recovered an additional firearm without a serial number and various firearm parts.
Court records show the suspect has a history of mental illness.
He was scheduled to make his first court appearance on Thursday.
