Charges: Man Topped 90 MPH in Brooklyn Center Crash Killing 6-year-old Girl
A Minneapolis man fled from police, eventually reaching speeds of more than 90 miles per hour, before slamming into another vehicle in Brooklyn Center and killing a 6-year-old girl, read charging documents filed Tuesday.
Hakeem Muhammad, 28, is charged with criminal vehicular homicide, criminal vehicular operation and fleeing police. Police say Muhammad was wanted for a murder last April in Minneapolis.
According to a criminal complaint:
Brooklyn Center police located Muhammad near the Speedway gas station off 57th Avenue. When officers tried to arrest the suspect with guns drawn, Muhammad sped away. Court documents show Muhammad was driving 94 miles per hour when he slammed into an SUV at 53rd and Humboldt avenues north.
Six-year-old Blessings McLaurin Grey died in the crash. Four other people were also in the vehicle, including a 15-year-old girl who was seriously hurt.
According to Brooklyn Center police policy, officers can initiate a pursuit for several circumstances, including if a driver or occupant is wanted for murder.
