Charges: Brooklyn Park Driver’s BAC Was Nearly Five Times Legal Limit
A campaign to crack down on drunken driving over the holidays resulted in an alleged extreme impaired driving case in Brooklyn Park.
Court records show David Karpitskiy, 31, of Brooklyn Park is charged with two counts of second-degree driving while impaired.
According to the criminal complaint:
Karpitskiy was driving a Mercedes when he struck another vehicle, causing an accident near 93rd and Zane avenues north on Dec. 15. Witnesses at the scene told police that Karpitskiy was in the left lane trying to turn right when he entered a different lane, striking another vehicle. The crash caused the other vehicle to strike a median and a street sign.
A responding officer noticed slurred speech and asked Karpitskiy if had been drinking. The suspect stated “he was sober while driving, but consumed alcohol after the accident,” the complaint said. Police also noticed a vodka bottle in the center console of the vehicle.
A breathalyzer test administered roughly one hour and 15 minutes after the crash registered an alcohol concentration of 0.37, nearly five times the legal limit.
According to the Department of Public Safety, the Brooklyn Park case was the third highest blood alcohol concentration (BAC) for drivers arrested in the Twin Cities over the holiday enforcement campaign, which was conducted Nov. 22-Dec. 31.
A case in Savage registered a 0.44, while the highest BAC was a driver arrested by Lakeville police who registered a 0.46.
