Can Do Canines Celebrates National Puppy Day
To observe National Puppy Day, New Hope nonprofit Can Do Canines is highlighting the volunteers who help them train puppies.
“We have a lot of volunteers that maybe aren’t ready for a puppy of their own and want to see what it’s like to live with a puppy and we can help with that in the short term,” said Julianne Larsen, director of training. “It’s puppy day for us everyday.”
Can Do Canines trains service dogs that help people with disabilities.
The nonprofit relies on volunteers to provide a whelping home for puppies that requires almost 24-hour care. The volunteers weigh the puppies, introduce them to new surfaces, teach them potty training, and more. “Whelper helpers” also go to the whelping homes to give the volunteers breaks when needed.
