Business Matters: Sugar & Spice Sweetery Opens in Maple Grove
Something new and sweet has arrived in Maple Grove. Located next to Rock Elm Tavern in a growing retail area known as The Grove, customers can treat themselves to something sweet. Welcome to Sugar & Spice Sweetery.
“This is an awesome area to be in,” said owner Dawn Olson-Wallerus.
When you first walk in customers are greeted to a sign on the floor that says “diet starts tomorrow.” Sugar & Spice Sweetery offers an array of freshly-made baked goods from cupcakes and cakelettes to tortes and tartlets. And that’s not all.
“We are proud to be scooping Honey & Mackie’s ice cream, we’ve got cookies and brownies. We’ve got cheesecakes,” said Olson-Wallerus.
And they have edible cookie dough that comes with plenty of topping choices.
“There’s no place in Maple Grove or anywhere by here that sells freshly scooped cookie dough. So I think that’s pretty cool, and the cupcakes seem like they’re a little extra homemade,” a customer told CCX News.
Sugar & Spice Sweetery: One Sweet Dream
For Olson-Wallerus all this sweet inspiration started to take shape when she baked cakes for her daughter’s first birthday. She still has photos of those Winnie-the-Pooh and Tigger cakes.
Then later in life, after a job loss in 2009, Olson-Wallerus went back to school to get a certificate in baking and pastry arts. It led to several baking jobs before she decided to open her own wedding cake business out of her home three years.
“My biggest compliment is when somebody says to me that is too pretty to cut,” she said. “Not only should the cake look good, but it should taste great too.”
Her business took off.
“In the process of three years, the business just blew up,” said Olson-Wallerus.
It all led to the Sugar & Spice Sweetery.
“It’s interesting because I never thought when I first got into the business that this was going to be the dream,” she recalled. “But as I kept growing, and as I kept seeing the next step and the next level, it did become a dream. And I still have people pinch me because it’s not real and it is.”
A Cinnamon Roll Weekend
Olson-Wallerus and her team start their day at 5 every morning. They work hard, but have fun too.
“Bakers do it ‘batter.’ Of course we do. We’re batter than everybody else,” she laughed, pointing to a wall of framed funny sayings.
The goodies also don’t stop on weekends. Sugar & Spice Sweetery offers freshly-baked cinnamon rolls on Saturdays and Sundays.
“We’re really excited for what the summer is going to bring.”
