Business Matters: Maple Grove Photographer Looks for Perfect Angle
Every person has a story. For Maple Grove photographer Kristin Jones every person has an angle.
“I love that every time I have someone in front of my camera, it’s a different and new experience because no one is the same,” said Jones. “I have to figure their angle to get their best picture.”
Jones started taking pictures when her kids were in high school. Her boys were into sports, theater productions and choir concerts. Eventually, her sons’ friends asked her to take their senior pictures.
“Two of my sons’ friends asked me to take their senior pictures. And I’m like, ‘okay, sure,” Jones recalled.
That passion for photography led Jones to starting a business in 2013. She now runs Angle Angle Photography out of her home.
Any Angle Photography Owner’s Second Act
What you may find surprising is Jones’ passion didn’t come into focus until only a few years ago.
“It took me to age 50 to figure that out,” said Jones.
Jones was an ultrasound technician for 25 years before deciding to do photography full-time. She did both jobs for the first few years. She decided she could no longer do both and quit her ultrasound job a year and a half ago. Now she can focus on her creativity full-time.
At Any Angle Photography, Jones specializes in high school senior photos and family pictures. She works to find the right background or provide the desired effect using editing software.
“I love when it clicks, and you’re like ‘I got that picture. I got those pictures, I know how to photograph that person,'” she said.
Jones says she her busiest time of year is in the fall, when she averages about six to eight family sessions a week. That’s on top of doing two to four photo shoots a week for high school seniors.
“My husband and family just knows that during those months that it’s going to be crazy,” she said.
As far as her biggest professional challenge? Jones says Minnesota weather ranks No. 1
“Most of my work is on location, outdoors,” she said.
Jones contracts with a makeup artist who comes to her house to help clients get that perfect look. She also says her business has grown through client recommendations.
“I have advertised very little, 99 percent has been word of mouth.”
