Bus Company Aims to Hire Dozens of Drivers to Serve Robbinsdale Area Schools
School bus drivers are in demand. The pandemic only amplified a driver shortage. It’s why a bus company now serving the Robbinsdale School District is offering added perks.
Durham School Services, which will start serving Robbinsdale schools in July, is looking to hire 80 drivers. That’s on top of the 50 it has hired so far.
Company officials say it’s an important job that ensures kids get to school safely. But they say it’s also a job with perks.
“It’s a great job in terms of benefits and flexibility with their schedule,” said Lucy Kalkman, senior vice president for Durham School Services. “It’s a part-time job and they can work a split shift and have afternoons off.”
Pay starts at 20 dollars an hour, which Kalkman says is $2 higher than competitors in the area. The company is also offering signing bonuses of $2,000 to $3,000 depending on experience. Other benefits include a 401 (k) plan, paid holidays off, and the ability for drivers to let their children ride the bus as they work.
Kalkman says drivers are guaranteed four hours a day, plus other driving opportunities for field trips and athletic events.
Durham School Services plans to hold job fairs every Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at 3900 Winnetka Ave. N.
