Brooklyn Park Receives FEMA Grant to Add Firefighters
Brooklyn Park will soon be in better position to respond to structure fires thanks to a federal grant.
This week, the Brooklyn Park City Council accepted a grant from FEMA called the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant.
The SAFER Grant awards $3.3 million to the city over the next three years. The money will help the fire department add 12 more positions.
The addition of those firefighters will help the department get closer to the nationally recommended standards for responding to a structure fire in a single-family dwelling. The new firefighters will have to complete the city’s six-month firefighter cadet academy, then undergo a probationary period.
Efforts will be made to keep these firefighters on staff when the grant runs out.
