Brooklyn Park Police: 20 Vehicle Thefts in Past 20 Days Were Hyundai Models
Police say two overnight stolen vehicle cases serve as an alarming reminder of an unusual number of vehicle thefts in recent weeks.
During an interview with CCX News, Brooklyn Park police inspector Elliot Faust counted 20 vehicle thefts in 20 days, starting Aug. 30. Faust said almost all the thefts have one thing in common: the vehicles stolen were either Hyundai Sonatas or Hyundai Elantras. It follows a national trend.
“We don’t why these are being targeted,” Faust said. “That’s something we’re looking into and we have to get to the bottom of why this specific make and model.”
The thefts are largely in the southwest part of city, from 63rd Avenue and County Road 81 east to 63rd and Zane avenues, then north to Interstate Highway 694.
Police say there are some things you can do to guard against this type of theft. Faust says if you can’t park in a garage, park your vehicle in a well-lit area and use a steering wheel lock or other anti-theft device. He says always remove valuables from your car before heading inside.
