Brooklyn Park Mayor Talks Northwest Growth Area Plan
The city of Brooklyn Park is envisioning a significant long-term growth plan that aims to increase its tax base and benefit its diverse population.
That vision is called the “Northwest Growth Area Plan.”
City leaders are focusing on more than 700 undeveloped acres in Brooklyn Park’s northwest corner by Highway 610 and Highway 169. They believe it could be a hub for biotech innovation and create new, in-demand housing.
“If we just pursue it in a fair and equitable fashion, people are going to have opportunities that they never had before,” said Brooklyn Park Mayor Hollies Winston.
The mayor said Brooklyn Park has been “drastically underinvested in” by the state and now’s a chance to create investment. He points to peer cities like the city of Bloomington that have received state legislative assistance.
“For us it is very much about creating wealth, and as you get that new tax base and tax revenue, that pushes down taxes throughout the rest of the city,” said Winston.
Brooklyn Park’s biotech innovation district comes with ambitious job goals.
Winston said the city’s vision could deliver 5,000-10,000 new jobs, while pushing down residential property taxes.
The Brooklyn Park City Council will further discuss its preferred vision for the Northwest Growth Area Plan at its Monday meeting.
