Brooklyn Park Considers Relaxing Garbage Can Storage Ordinance
Brooklyn Park is collecting feedback on a proposed change to its waste container storage ordinance.
Under the proposed change, garbage cans could be stored along the side of single- and two-family properties. The city’s current ordinance allows garbage cans to be stored inside a garage or in the back yard. Trash containers can also be placed by the curb starting at 3 p.m. before collection day.
The proposed ordinance change would not allow overflowing containers and extra bags of waste stored outside containers.
According to city officials, waste containers stored in public view is the most common violation type in the city each year in residential neighborhoods.
Last year, Brooklyn Park city inspectors responded to more than 800 trash can storage violations. But city officials say storing containers out of public view can be difficult for a variety of reasons, including limited space, lack of screening and fence locations.
The city council is expected to hold a public hearing on the issue at its Aug. 22 meeting.
