Brooklyn Park Apartment Fire Sends Three To Hospital
The Brooklyn Park Fire Department is reminding residents to keep an eye on their stoves after a cooking fire sent three people to the hospital.
The fire started around 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 13 at an apartment in the 6800 block of 63rd Avenue.
Arriving firefighters found a fire in a second-floor apartment.
They extinguished the fire, but two adults and one child were sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
According to Kris Skow, Deputy Fire Marshal with the Brooklyn Park Fire Department, a grease fire started in the apartment when someone walked away from what they were cooking.
Skow said it’s dangerous to leave food cooking without supervision.
She also said not to use water when extinguishing a grease fire.
“Water and oil do not get along, so the best thing is to put a lid on it or use a fire extinguisher,” she said. “But give yourself some space if you’re using a fire extinguisher so you don’t splatter the grease all over the place.”
Skow recommended storing combustibles, such as paper products or unopened mail, at least three feet away from a stove.
