Man Charged in Brooklyn Center Drug-Deal Robbery
Hennepin County prosecutors Tuesday announced charges against a suspect in a Dec. 11 homicide at a gas station in Brooklyn Center. Earlier Tuesday, police arrested the suspect.
Giovanni Williams, 23, of Minneapolis is charged with second-degree murder. Prosecutors say the case stemmed from a drug-deal robbery.
On Dec. 11, Brooklyn Center police were called to the Pump n’ Munch gas station located on the 1500 block of 69th Avenue North where officers located a man in a vehicle with a gunshot wound. The man, identified as 45-year-old Dattreas Stewart of Brooklyn Center, died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head.
An investigation led police to believe the shooting was not random. Police arrested Williams early Tuesday at a residence in Brooklyn Park. Brooklyn Center police say they are not seeking any additional suspects.
According to the criminal complaint, Stewart’s girlfriend told police that a man she knew as “Giovanni” shot the victim. She also informed police that earlier in the day, she had arranged with another person to sell an ounce of marijuana for $300. That other person put her in contact with Giovanni Williams, and the agreement was to meet at the gas station.
The victim’s girlfriend drove herself and her boyfriend to the gas station where they met with Williams, the complaint said. Williams got out of a Chrysler sedan and climbed into the back seat of a Chevy Blazer that Stewart was in. Williams talked with Stewart about the marijuana, then asked to smell it, the complaint states. Williams then indicated he was robbing him and fired one shot into his head, the charging documents said.
