Brooklyn Center Looks to Make Golf Course Profitable
City officials in Brooklyn Center are mulling ways to help the city-owned Centerbrook Golf Course become profitable.
One idea: partnering with the youth development organization, First Tee, to make the course their state headquarters.
First Tee describes itself as an organization that empowers kids and teens through the game of golf.
“I like the idea of leveraging regional partners or state partnerships to build some additional interest,” said Mayor April Graves about the possibility of partnering with First Tee. “And if they’re interested in us, then we must be doing something right with the maintenance of our golf course, or they wouldn’t be interested in it.”
Potentially partnering with First Tee was one of several ideas outlined at a Brooklyn Center City Council meeting earlier this month.
Centerbrook Golf Course sits on 28 acres in Brooklyn Center.
City staff asked the council to approve a $60,000 feasibility study to explore ways to help Centerbrook become profitable, but the council denied that request.
One council member suggested selling the property.
“Golf courses have become more and more expensive to maintain and to do,” said Council Member Dan Jerzak. “We also have a couple of additional problems in that, in our backyard, we have Topgolf.”
Some of the other ideas for profitability include purchasing golf simulators and staying open year-round to host winter weddings and events.
