Bill Would Name Hwy. 610 Hortman Memorial Highway
Legislation introduced at the state Capitol would designate Hwy. 610 as Hortman Memorial Highway.
The bill, House File 3739, honors the legacy of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman. Both were killed in their Brooklyn Park home on June 14, 2025 by a suspect who prosecutors say had targeted multiple lawmakers in a politically motivated attack.
On opening day of the legislative session, Minnesota lawmakers in the House and Senate honored the Hortmans with a day of remembrance in the House chamber.
Democratic Representatives Erin Koegel, Zach Stephenson and Brad Tabke authored the legislation.
According to the bill, the commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Transportation must adopt a suitable design to mark the highway with appropriate signage.
“Each sign that identifies the trunk highway, including but not limited to route and guide signs, must specify the designated name under this subdivision instead of or in addition to the highway number,” the legislation read.
The bill was introduced last week and referred to the Minnesota House Transportation Finance and Policy Committee. Sen. John Hoffman, who was shot nine times by the same alleged assassin, introduced companion legislation in the Minnesota Senate.
The suspect, Vance Boelter, 58, is scheduled back in federal court on April 17 for a status hearing. Boelter faces murder charges that, if convicted, could result in either a life sentence or the death penalty.

Local leaders celebrate the completion of the final Highway 610 segment last November.
