Bicyclist Killed in Collision with School Bus in Brooklyn Park
Brooklyn Park police responded to a school bus accident Wednesday morning that killed a bicyclist. The incident happened just before 6:30 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Zane and 65th Avenue.
Police say the victim, described as a middle-aged man, was riding his bicycle when he was struck by the bus just south of Interstate 94. He died from his injuries at the scene. Deputy Chief Mark Bruley said 10 students were on the school bus, which was headed to a nearby charter school in North Minneapolis. The kids were transported to their school on a different bus.
“There were some kids visibly upset when they transferred them from the bus to the new bus,” said Bruley. “So that’s why we took some precautions to make sure they get the help they need.”
No one on the school bus was injured, but officials say the kids were shaken up. Police and their school made sure counselors were available to talk to the kids. Police say the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Bruley noted that investigators do not suspect drugs, alcohol, or weather as contributing factors to the crash.
Brooklyn Park police continue to investigate what happened with assistance from the Minnesota State Patrol and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.
