BCA Releases New Details in Brooklyn Park Officer-Involved Shooting
State investigators have revealed new details in the officer-involved shooting that occurred during a child death investigation in Brooklyn Park on June 23.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has identified the officer involved in the shooting, as well as the man that was shot.
Momodou Dibba, who has been a police officer for three months, fired a gunshot, striking an armed man.
Investigators say the incident occurred as officers were at a Brooklyn Park home in the 8700 block of Queens Garden North investigating the death of an infant.
Police were dispatched to the home just before 4 a.m. on a report of a baby not breathing.
Officers found an infant at the property who was in critical medical condition. The baby later died at Hennepin County Medical Center.
Father Was “Distraught” Before Shooting
The infant’s father, identified as Oronde Reese, 24, was outside the home “and appeared distraught after learning of the death of his son,” according to a press release from the BCA.
As officers investigated, he went into his bedroom and locked the door. A family member then forced their way into the room with police officers.
Reese was in the closet and told police he had a gun.
“A physical struggle ensued and that’s when Dibba fired his department handgun, striking Reese,” the BCA release stated. “Officers provided medical care on-scene until Reese could be taken to North Memorial Medical Center where he remains in stable condition.”
The BCA says investigators recovered a handgun at the scene.
Officers that were on the scene were wearing body cameras and the BCA is reviewing the video footage as part of the investigation.
The BCA will investigate the incident, then provide its findings to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office to review.
Meanwhile, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the infant’s death.
