6 Teens Injured, Close to 50 Shots Fired in Brooklyn Center Incident
Brooklyn Center police continue to investigate a shooting Sunday evening that involved dozens of gunshots and left six people – all of them teenagers – wounded.
The shooting took place near a parking lot of the Girl Scouts River Valley Service Center on a frontage road near the 5600 block of Brooklyn Boulevard at about 6:45 p.m. Sunday. According to Brooklyn Center police, officers recovered evidence that indicated close to 50 shots were fired from three different firearms.
Police later learned that all six people injured received transportation to an area hospital to be treated non-life threatening injuries, police said.
Brooklyn Center police say the people involved in the shooting knew each other in some way.
“At this time, we have several active leads that we are pursuing,” read a statement put out by Brooklyn Center police. “We don’t believe this was a random act and the general public is not at risk.”
A representative at the Girl Scouts office refused comment on Monday morning, but in an e-mail to Girl Scouts and their families, CEO Marisa Williams wrote that a Girl Scout troop was meeting at the time inside the facility, but no one in the meeting was injured. According to Williams, first responders helped scouts and parents get safely to their vehicles and on their way after the meeting.
“I spoke with the troop leader this morning, and she shared that the girls all responded to her instructions and remained calm,” Williams wrote.”All their parents/caregivers have been in contact with the troop leader. We have offered professional counseling services to the troop members for further support.”
Jill Modeen lives two houses away from where the shooting happened. She spoke with CCX Media on Monday morning as she was out for a walk.
“It’s happening more often. I don’t think we should defund the police, because if I’m scared,” said Modeen, who said she’d lived in Brooklyn Center since 1970. “If I didn’t have my roommate, my dogs, and my cameras, I wouldn’t live in Brooklyn Center.”
Police have not made any arrests at this time. This a developing story and CCX News will provide further details as they become available.
