20 Years and Counting, ‘Northwest City Politics’ Offers Voice to Local Leaders
Every Wednesday night on CCX Media public access channels, you’ll find a window into the world of local politics.
“Northwest City Politics” has aired for 20 years, offering a way for the public to get to know their elected leaders. The program relies on the dedication and curiosity of volunteers who put it together.
“We’ve opened the doors to all our elected officials,” said Eric Margolis, one of the hosts of the show.
On this particular night, Class of 2024 Armstrong High School graduate Lizzy Nyoike interviewed Brooklyn Park City Council Member XP Lee.
“I generally didn’t know or pay attention to what was going on in my city until I found out about Northwest City Politics and CCX Media in general,” said Nyoike.
Kevin Vandenberg, who volunteers on the show’s technical operations, describes the show as unique because of its hyperlocal focus.
“If you can get in tune with what’s happening in your day-to-day life and the people in the community that help provide facilities and the safety and the legal representation, and your voice in government, that where’s it all really happens, because that touches you every single day,” said Vandenberg.
Carrying on a Legacy
“Northwest City Politics” was a passion project of the late Juanita Hoffe. She created, produced and hosted the show since 2004 until her passing last year.
“We sure do miss Juanita, but it’s really great that the show continues on,” reflected Margolis. “We’re trying to nurture the next generation to carry the torch.”
And carry on they have. This year “Northwest City Politics” received the Significant Community Program award at the 2024 Best of the Midwest Media Fest, an event that celebrates the best of community media.
“I’d like to think that Juanita is looking down on us and feels really good about the young people that we’re bringing in to the show,” said Margolis. “For us for the crew, even though she’s physically not here with us, her spirit is with us in everything we try to do and accomplish here.”
“Northwest City Politics” airs Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. on CCX Media channels.
