Water Treatment Plant’s Solar Panels Now Operational in Robbinsdale
The 200 solar panels atop Robbinsdale’s water treatment facility are now operational, and city leaders say it could save as much as ten percent on the overall energy bill for the facility.
“It makes sense from an environmental standpoint, using free energy from the sun, and also from a pragmatic or economic standpoint, where you’re saving money on electric bill every month,” said Ward 4 Councilmember Aaron Wagner. “It’s a good thing.”
XCel Energy activated the panels after a final inspection on November 12.
“We’re taking seriously the affects of climate change on a local level, and this is, I think, a really good way to address that as we can, just one city in the metro area,” said Wagner.
He also credits outgoing Mayor Bill Blonigan for his push toward more sustainable goals for the city during his 40 years on council.
“He was a big reason why this happened,” said Wagner. “I learned a lot from him and from city staff about the benefits of installing these on municipal buildings and what they can provide for the average resident here.”
